It's a Finish! Day of the Dead Tapestry Notebook Cover

Notebook Cover hand stitched with sugar skull design

It's been a long journey to the finish line for my tapestry needlepoint Sugar Skulls Notebook but I can finally take to the streets and tap my own danse macabre!

The best thing about this that I can't capture in a photo is the way it
feels to hold. It's so tactile and rich feeling it makes my toes tingle. I gave this one to the lovely Donna who inspired its design, but I'm dying to make one for myself as it's just so damn lovely to touch.

If you've read my post, Flapping About: Plastic Canvas Book Sleeve WiP, you'll have had a sneak peek at the inside flaps of the cover. Here's one in action, do check out that post to see the colour scheme of the other flap.

Fair isle inside book cover stitched in wool on plastic canvas

This is the first notebook cover I've made from plastic canvas and I'd definitely do a couple of things differently...

The depth I added so the notebook would slide in is much too deep, I'm sure I could've made them a stitch or so smaller and the book would've still fit. I made it like this so that the cover can be removed once the notebook's full and put on a fresh one. Front on you don't notice them but the side view is a little clumpy looking for my liking.

So much so I put effort into angling the camera viewpoint to disguise the clumpiness when I shot this for Instagram!

The side on photo also shows the other thing I would've done differently. I stitched the elastic to the inside of the back cover but it lifts the pages and front cover of the notebook up and away from the back.

I wondered if stitching down the elastic so it's more taut would resolve that but next time I'll just sew the elastic to the outside of the back cover so it wraps around the book from the very back and holds it nicely shut instead.

In my previous post I kept the front cover design under wraps and held off showing a photo of the back of the stitching... I love how the tent stitch works to create a lining and an almost mirror image of the front.

This may be my first notebook cover but it certainly won't be my last! I already have some smaller A6 notebooks in my stash ready to cover so keep your eyes peeled for those.

Before I get round to covering them I'm working on some posts for Cut Out and Keep. If you're a regular follower, you'll recognise some but I have a few surprises up my sleeve too and I'm looking forward to sharing them with you all. If you haven't visited the Cut Out and Keep community before they're worth a look, with over 50,000 craft projects from over 100,000 crafters all around the world there's sure to be something to get your creative juices flowing!

Until next time, have a lovely floss filled week!

    1. Thank you so much, Wendy, I'm very pleased you think so. I hadn't heard of it at all until recently! I'm enjoying discovering more blogs as time goes on, my favourite find this week is Wee Folk Studio.
